History of Mike O’Callaghan Community Integration

Mike O’Callaghan Military Medical Center (MOMMC) operates a multispecialty 12-bed critical care unit, 30-bed multi-service unit, and 22-bed around-the-clock emergency department in the northeast corner of the Las Vegas metropolitan area in Clark County.

The area where MOMMC is located contains a growing population without a nearby civilian hospital, and has been highlighted as a medical “area of need” by the Southern Nevada Health District. Driven by local demographics and community support, the Defense Health Agency (DHA) approved MOMMC to enter the National Defense Authorization Act of 2017 “717 Pilot Program” to treat civilian emergency medical service (EMS) patients for clinical readiness maintenance.

MOMMC is undergoing a multi-million dollar modernization and expansion project, including the newly constructed Emergency Department, which will result in 100 medical surgical beds and 20 critical care beds to fully serve both the community and the Air Force’s readiness mission.  As of 31 October 2021, MOMMC’s new Emergency Department is open to any critical care patients via the local EMS system.

The synergistic relationship between MOMMC, civilian partners, and the community creates a platform for MOMMC to provide high quality medical care in a safety-net healthcare community, while allowing Air Force medics to maintain clinical readiness skills needed in expeditionary environments.

MOMMC successfully completed a consultative visit with the American College of Surgeons (ACS) in June 2021 as we actively pursue a Level III trauma designation. Upon level III Trauma designation and ACS verification, projected to occur in 2022, MOMMC will be able to further serve the local community by treating trauma patients and furthering the DHA’s mission of ready reliable care.
